This chart rounds out the second half of these number gauge sizes down to #1, which is the largest drill bit size. Gauge This is especially useful when creating a hole from the outside of your house to the interior. Lengths of up to 18″ or more may be needed. To use a drill point gauge, first select the appropriate size and type of drill bit for the job. Next, clamp the gauge in a vise or similar device so that it is level. Place the tip of the drill bit into one of the holes in the gauge and make sure that it is seated all the way into the hole. Thread pitch gauges cover a variety of thread forms and sizes including Metric 60°, Unified National (UN) 60° and British Standard Whitworth (BSW) 55°. Pitch for metric sizes is measured in mm whereas pitch for imperial sizes is measured in TPI (threads per inch). Leaf pictures range from 0.25mm up to 7mm or 4TPI to 62TPI.

Number and letter gauges do not follow a formula or standard increments. They are loosely based on the Stubs Steel Wire Gauge, with gauge sizes that are similar (but not entirely identical) to that system. There are two main aspects that you need to consider when gauging a drill bit – the size and the type. The size of the drill bit is going to be determined by the size of the hole that you need to create. The type of drill bit is going to be determined by the material that you’re drilling through. Step 3: Carefully adjust the drill point gauge so that the needle is pointing to the right drill point angle. Depth Gauge – The depth gauge is used to measure the depth of a hole. It is composed of two sets of markings that indicate the depth of the hole and the size of the bit.Step 4: Once the drill point gauge is correctly positioned, make sure the needle is pointing to the correct angle for the drill point. Step 2: Make sure the drill point gauge is in the right position. It should be parallel to the surface of the drill bit. A drill gauge consists of three components: a guide plate, a drill bit holder, and a drill sleeve. The guide plate is a flat metal plate with a row of holes of various sizes. The drill bit holder is a clip that fits into one of the holes on the guide plate and holds the drill bit in place. The drill sleeve is a tube that fits over the drill bit and provides a guide for the drill bit as it is inserted into the material. What Safety Precautions Should be Taken when Using a Drill Gauge? Drill Point Gauge – The drill point gauge is used to measure the angle of a drill bit. It consists of two sets of markings that indicate the angle of the drill bit and the size of the hole.

Another example of a metric set of drill sizes is the Renard series, which uses a simple factor to determine the diameter: Plastic – Plastic is another material that a drill gauge can be used on. Plastic is relatively easy to drill, but a drill gauge can still be used to ensure the hole is the correct size. First things first. If you were to look at the most all encompassing collection of multi-purpose, twist-type bits, how many drill bit sizes would there be?A point gauge consists of a metal tube with a small opening at one end and a Bourdon tube at the other end. The Bourdon tube is connected to a pointer that moves over a scale. The scale is divided into units of pressure. Accuracy Rating: Drill gauges typically have an accuracy rating of ±0.001 inch (0.025 mm) or better.

Hook is adjustable and can be shortened or extended on either side of the rule, and may also be removed if desiredLetter gauge drill sizes are used primarily in North American with A starting with the smallest size working 26 size increments to Z. Gauge Accuracy: Drill gauges are highly accurate and can measure hole diameters with a high degree of precision. If you need drill bit sizes that are larger than 1″, you can often use a spade bit for wood and other soft materials.
