About this deal

Anthologies don't get much better than this masterful assembly of 23 horror shorts, first published between 1872 and 1964. some stories were more engaging than others-- I think my favourite was 'the tarn of sacrifice' in terms of pacing and foreshadowing. All in all, seeing as I got this on offer for 5 euro I will keep it, but it's not worth any more than that frankly.

The subject matter of this tome unexpectedly caused my ears to prick up with curiosity – considering my own involvement with this whole folk horror thing – and as I am a little bit of a collector of weird short stories, I was very intrigued to see which tales he would select. Sőt, még érvényes, jól működő filozófiákat is építhetnek erre a gondolatmenetre, ezt tették a romantikusok is, Atlanti-óceánon innen és túl. Also interesting seeing past centuries' perception of Halloween, and some folklore/practices I was not aware of such as sin eating. This makes the book a good choice for those new to the folk horror ways, whilst still being of appeal to those already acquainted with the strange goings-on behind the old hedges and the standing stones. Andy Paciorek is an author and artist working mostly within the fields of horror, folklore, Forteana and other Weird stuff.Rolt (if in the main for a compelling horror rendering of my old neck of the woods) and Bind Your Hair by Robert Aickman, a very modern clash between a young woman's aspirations, her could-be life with her fiancée, and interesting goings-on on a small town's outskirts. This richly illustrated anthology gathers together classic short stories from masters of supernatural fiction including M. This may not be too unexpected; folk horror is a prevalent feature within British and Irish weird fiction as it fits so well with the landscape, lore, and history of these isles.

So wicked witches, bad fairies, and the restless dead be damned, for those who are looking to fill up their folk horror fiction shelves, Damnable Tales is a must-have. By this I mean it is not likely that these stories are already in an anthology you already have in your collection, which is a problem I usually have, especially with vampire stories. It also clearly illustrates otherwise to anyone who may still think that folk horror originated with three British films at the tail-end of the hippy dream.

Wicked witches, bad fairies, and the restless dead be damned, for those who are looking to fill up their folk horror fiction shelves, Damnable Tales is a must-have. This is a great story, and one of the oldest in the collection- Nesbit was writing at the same time as Arthur Conan Doyle! Sheridan Le Fanu's dark fairy tale, 'Laura Silver-Bell' is also hard going on a first read (even the narrator apologises for the Northumbrian dialect) but stick with it. Though there are intricate illustrations I found the first couple of stories had so much archaic old English that they were difficult to follow, others needed the dictionary by my side, there were so many words that needed looking up, thereby breaking up the story IMO. For example many, many wanderers relate the mysterious occurrences they have witnessed out in the woods.
